OBJECTIVES

It is the objective of DEWACT LABS to provide an accurate and specific diagnostic assay for reliable discrimination of bacterial and viral infections in patients within minutes, avoiding hours or evend days of unnecessary diagnostic "lab"-time.

TODAY'S SITUATION

• Common Understanding: As most people know, antibiotics don’t work when fighting viral infections but can be a solution when dealing with a bacterial infection.

• Well-known problem: Very often, distinguishing between a viral or a bacterial infection takes too much time: It can be a cost ineffective and tedious process.

• Devastating outcome: Antibiotics for ambulatory treatments were prescribed more than 266.1 million times (2014) in the US alone of which at least 30%* were unnecessary as the persons involved were unknowingly dealing with a viral infection.

• Both, the lacking differentiation between viral and bacterial infections lead to numerous deaths every year and cost the economy billions.

The topic is widely discussed across all media, countries, and industries. Not only the misusage of antibiotics caused by a lack of detection opportunities, but also the impossibility of an early detection of viral infections, means a substantial social and economic cost burden to societies around the globe.

"Antimicrobial resistance is occurring everywhere in the world, compromising our ability to treat infectious diseases, as well as undermining many other advances in health and medicine. The goal of the global action plans is to ensure, for as long as possible, continuity of successful treatment and prevention of infectious diseases with effective and safe medicines that are quality-assured, used in a responsible way, and accessible to all who need them."

To achieve this goal, the global action plan sets out five strategic objectives:

1. to improve awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance

2. to strengthen knowledge through surveillance and research

3. to reduce the incidence of infection

4. to optimize the use of antimicrobial agents; and

5. develop the economic case for sustainable investment that takes account of the needs of all countries, and increase investment in new medicines, diagnostic tools, vaccines and other interventions.
